Diabetes remains a public health problem with a costly conventional treatment, especially for rural populations. Medicinal plants offer an alternative. « Diabète free » and « Pancreas free » are two herbal preparations used by a traditional healer in Côte d'Ivoire to treat diabetes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of combination of « Diabète free » and « Pancréas free ».
Clinical and biological tolerance was assessed by studying the acute and sub-acute toxicity in laboratory rats. Acute toxicity was assessed according to the OECD 423 guidelines. Subacute toxicity was evaluated according to the OECD 407 guidelines. Solutions were administered by oral route at doses of 28, 14 and 7 mg/kg for « Diabètes-free » and 18, 9 and 4.5 mg/kg for « Pancréas-free ».
Acute toxicity results showed that the combination of « Diabètes-free » and « Pancréas-free » showed no signs of toxicity up to 300 mg/kg. However, at 1000 mg/kg all animals died, indicating that the combination was moderately well tolerated. Subacute toxicity showed no signs of clinical toxicity or biological toxicity in haematology, kidney or liver in rats treated with the combination.
The combination of « Diabètes-free » and « Pancréas-free » showed good clinical, haematological, renal and hepatic tolerance at experimental doses.
